This is a sad fact of society, where we still think of mental health concerns as internal and caused by the person. Of course, the person can and should do things to change their condition, but the archiac notion that the person is sinner or purposely acting depressed to avoid work is hard-wired in the society. Many activists in the field are trying to shake this notion and we are one of them. What you can do personally is to understand more about depression and engage people in conversation to explain that it's not your fault. There are some WHO videos too that help to explain.
