When we procrastinate, our reward system has to deal with the fact that we did not complete a task. When we complete a task that is important to us, a chemical called dopamine is released which makes us feel good so that we do the activity again. However, since procrasrination means not doing the work, dopamine is not released. Depression involves have clinically low levels of dopamine as people simply cannot motivate themselves to do things that they like or are important to them, and due to a weak reward mechanism, depression grows. Therefore, since the same chemical is implicated in both procrastination and depression, it might thus be related.
