There are certain kinds of life events that make women much more vulnerable to depression, for example post partum depression. Further, women are still at the recieving end of illiteracy, poverty and violence, not to mention sexual crimes. The society damns them no matter what they do, and there are double standards both at work and home. All of these together may be contributing to more ratings of depression in women. An ancillory explanation is that men may feel it that much to but because they percieve seeking help as being weak, they do not approach help and therefore, their condition remians unreported.
