How do I get rid of my agoraphobia?

  I feel very high anxiety when I drive in high traffic places. I feel equally bad when attending parties/functions. Can you please suggest how can I help myself?

    Dear Rashmi, feeling anxious in public places / parties, feeling tensed in traffic snarls etc are usually common. But if you feel these are excess, then you should address it as social anxiety. This is treated with the help of psychotherapy.

    Any sort of phobia happens because of one bad experience you might have had in those conditions AND the beliefs you have about the bad experience. One such belief is that 'If it happened once, it will always happen'. Can you identify such beliefs? If you can, then try to argue with those beliefs 'where is the proof that just because I had an accident once, it will always happen when I am in the car?" 

    Slowly, such rigid thoughts can be changed. There are many self help manuals for phobias you could use, especially those with CBT REBT paradigms. Relaxation and behavioural activation can help. 

    If the phobia started due to some trauma, you may need to work through the trauma with an expert.
