Hello Friends,

why do we get mental disorders

  I would like to see opinions (kind of debate) from everyone on - why and who gets mental disorders? 

What kind of people are more prone to this - highly educated, labourers, troubled childhood, over thinking people,  athiest, over-religious, less educated, too much social media, too much thinking of sex/opposite gender intimacy, what ever I missed and you want to add. This information will be very useful to all. Then we have various types of disorders, some less serious, some very serious, any criteria there who can suffer from what.

    I am taking below from an answer on Quora to highlight that it has to with chemicals and can happen to anyone at any time. The author of below post is a young girl who completed her medical education and it also emphasize that it needs proper treatment. let me tell you a story. a few years back, I had a couple of big issues going on in my life. not going to jot them down here, but I had crossed the garden variety unhappiness and anxiety and reached the further stages. I was a young medical student and I knew what my symptoms meant, they were all given in my books to see! trouble is, I didn't want to accept that I needed help. to me, that felt like admitting that I was weak, that something was wrong with my brain, that I was broken and needed to be fixed. I was just a little down in dumps, little upset. I was living in a hostel and my lifestyle was pretty crappy. sure I just needed to eat better and sleep on time and exercise more and get some fresh air, right? maybe some shopping, some good music, I would be fine. except that I wasn't. I did all that I could. nothing helped. I started developing physical symptoms, a defence mechanism by brain to divert the mental stress into actual physical pain. for 3 days, I was in hell. at that point, I broke and fixed an appointment with my college psychiatrist. he was a young fellow and he picked up on my extreme discomfort and shame easily. he asked me to tell him what's wrong. why am I so tense. I blurted out that I felt ashamed of my broken brain, ashamed that I wasn't normal. his answer changed my view point for the rest of my life. know what he told me? he told me to imagine a patient. this patient has pneumonia and difficulty in breathing. he is sitting there in my OPD telling me he can't breathe, he has a fever, his chest hurts. What will I do? I will start him on antibiotics to treat him, as soon as possible. after all, pneumonia is dangerous and I don't want my patient to suffer. but there is a catch. my patient doesn't want to be treated. he is ashamed of his broken, weak body and lungs. he feels he doesn't need any help, he can "OVERCOME" his disease. his plan is to get up early every morning, exercise, stop smoking, eat better and sleep on time. he is sure he doesn't need antibiotics, he will cure his pneumonia on his own. would you be OK with it, as his doctor? his lungs are drowning and he is coughing up sputum while you are talking. suddenly everything made sense when I started thinking of an disease, like pneumonia in place of depression. I realized, how foolish my misgivings and doubts had been. I needed help cuz my brain was not making the chemicals it needed to. there was ACTUALLY something wrong! depression is a highly overrated term. we say we are depressed when we are upset or frustrated or missing someone or just wanna whine in general. there is an actual list of symptoms which you need to have before you get a diagnosis, before you are said to be clinically depressed, before it can be said that yes, you lack the happy chemicals in your body. self diagnosed low mood once in a while isn't depression. depression is when it takes you half an hour to muster enough energy to get out of bed in the morning. PLEASE NOTE. my point isn't that lifestyle modifications don't help. they do. tremendously. exercise is one of the best things you can do fight depression. same as a healthy diet and proper sleep. my point is, expecting a depressed patient to keep a healthy outlook, think positive thoughts and fight depression makes as much sense as pushing a person from roof and asking him to start flying. he doesn't know how to. a depressed person has no energy or motivation left to bother about anything. he needs medical help. telling someone to cheer up and stop moping doesn't help. depression is a big taboo in our country. we hide it from parents, from friends, from our partners. the amount of guilt, secrecy and shame involved can be huge. depression is such an ugly thing. a completely normal looking person could be suicidal. one thing people often say is, Oh he didn't seem depressed! you know why? cuz he hid it from everyone. people don't want to accept that they have a problem. well meaning advice to throw open the windows and smile, sing and laugh more doesn't help. know what helps? going to a doctor and getting it checked out. treatment doesn't always mean pills. it can also mean counselling and therapy. I hid my condition for weeks. I even managed to fool myself. 3 days after I started my treatment I slept for 6 hours in night. something which hadn't happened for a long time. recovery wasn't easy, but I felt hopeful again. I need to say it again. diet, exercise, positive thoughts, they all help. but sometimes, you need to see a doctor too. if that seems like a thing a crazy pill peddling doctor will say, try to imagine a pneumonia patient telling you he will cure himself with lifestyle modifications.

    I don't fit into any of the mentioned criterion. I am just an average person, but still I got depression and anxiety disorders. Why?

    What a topic? my opinion - if you think less, take things less seriously, you have less chance of getting these. but then I think if it is related to chemical imbalance as said in books, then what I said before how is that possible

    People who study very hard for tough competitive exams to be 1 among millions have high chance of getting these, I mean I have seen those case there.

    I think people who are not educated and work like laborers don't get these disorders.. They don't think too much, they don't have time to think also.

    Hi, Thanks for starting this very interesting topic. I am not a professional. So these are just my personal opinion. It is like why some people get diabetes/fever some times. So anyone can get mental disorders. The smartest person you know, the most successful person you know can also get mental disorder in some part of their life. It can happen to anyone at any time. Any thoughts?
